Fostering

What is so special about fostering with MAA?

Most of our dogs travel to our partnered out-of-province rescues (BC and Ontario) for adoption after a short stay in Winnipeg. Depending on the dog’s condition and flight schedule, it is approximately a 2-3 week commitment. Once the dogs arrive in Winnipeg, they receive vet care and lots of TLC, then off they go to find their forever home in another province!

What kind of dogs are usually fostered?

We rescue dogs of all ages. Puppies, adult dogs, mom with newborn litter, injured dogs…you name it! If you have experience with whelping, or if you are particularly interested in helping adult dogs, WE NEED YOU!

Manitoba Animal Alliance  foster application process involves the following steps:

  1. Understanding the commitment and setting expectations. Fostering a dog requires flexibility and we ask that you be open to fostering dogs that are of different sizes, ages, breeds, needs and abilities.

  2. Confirming Your Availability. As new dogs are scheduled to arrive, we will contact you to see if you are available to foster. Or you can confirm your availability in our foster intake messenger thread that you will be added to once your foster application has been approved. We use messenger a lot for communication (both in our general chats, and separate chats for you, and your foster coordinator team to help guide you through the process), so please be prepared to receive our notifications.

  3. Begin Fostering. After being paired with a dog, you will be contacted to arrange a pick-up and drop-off time for the dog as well as how and where to collect supplies you’ll need. A lot of our dogs arrive via plane. Sometimes they are needed to be picked up at Perimeter aviation, or sometimes smaller airlines at St.Andrews Airport. Please allow yourself (or with help from your community) enough flexibility to be help with these airport pick-ups.

Am I expected to provide the necessary supplies for my foster dog?

No! All of our fosters are provided with basic supplies, including food, leashes, collars, toys, shampoo, etc. Our supplies locations' are conveniently located throughout the city so our fosters can easily gather any supplies that they need.

What is the application process?

Please complete our online foster application below.

As we are all volunteers, please be patient and allow us some time to process the applications! We perform several checks to verify the information and will be in contact with you to arrange for a quick home check so we can meet in person and answer any questions.

Once all the requirements are fulfilled, you will be added to our private Facebook group so you can start helping animals in need!
